Vocation Stories

In this area you will meet Daughters of Charity who want to share their personal vocation stories with you.

Sister Mary Rose McPhee, D.C.

Sister Mary Rose McPheeI considered my vocation to “religious life” as a call from God because it was not a natural desire.  The initial prompting or urging occurred in my middle teens as well as my strong desire for marriage.  The inner desire and longing to give myself to God in service, especially with the Poor and in Community, increased during High School and Nursing School years.  Nursing experience seemed to have connected with the “call.”  I frequently accompanied a Sister (Daughter of Charity) in a visit to the Poor.  In my Senior Year of Nursing I applied for membership in the Daughters of Charity and was accepted.

Taking the initial step to enter the Daughters of Charity was a manifestation of Faith and Mystery without understanding the “why me?”  However, I still was convinced that I needed an environment of prayer and a living experience with a group of women sharing a common mission for the support needed to pursue a life of service and to go where needed.  In my many years of living the life, I gradually became more aware of a gradual unfolding of my identity, my relationship with God, self and others, and the integration of life experiences, both those which were painful (or difficult) as well as joyful … and to be faithful to becoming what I was meant to be.
