In the spirit of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

On May 23rd several folks from the Daughters of Charity West Central Province gathered in Emmitsburg, Maryland for the Seton Legacy of Charity Bicentennial Medal Ceremony.  The Medal Award Ceremony is one of the many scheduled events throughout 2009 to celebrate the bicentennial of the arrival of Mother Seton into Emmitsburg.  It was truly a joy-filled and inspiring day.  People from all walks of life and many parts of the world were recipients.  There were recipients from Italy, South Korea, Canada and the USA.  Bishop Kevin C. Abbey Youth Festival

Thousands of young people from many surrounding states gathered on the grounds of St. Joseph Abbey in St. Benedict, LA for the 2009 Youth Festival, “Into the Deep” held this March.  Three Daughters of Charity worked a booth that was quite a hit with the crowd.  Visitors to the Sisters’ booth came away sporting colorful strings of Mardi Gras Beads.  Sisters Juanita Chenevert, Clare Kelly and Mary Ellen Seo spent the day greeting and chatting with young people of all ages from many places.  The day included speakers, music with the band Ayleron, prayer, visits to many booths where sisters and priests shared vocation experiences, and Mass celebrated by Archbishop Hughes.  The day closed with candle-light Eucharistic adoration.

Sr. Margaret Barrett visits the West Central Province

Sister Margaret Barrett, a Daughter of Charity of Scottish descent, serves as the English-speaking member of the General Council of the DCs at the Motherhouse in Paris, France.  She visited the Daughters
of the West Central Province in January, 2009.  She affirmed the commitments of Daughters around the world to deeper personal and communal prayer and to courage and risk in ministry to those living in poverty.  Sr. Margaret spent time with the Sisters in New Orleans visiting education and health care ministries.  She was even
serenaded by the St. Augustine High School jazz band.  She also visited the border areas of South Texas, Reynosa in Mexico and El Paso to better understand the complex issues of immigration as experienced in our province.
