Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul West Central Province

The Spring/Summer 2010 issue of CONFLUENCE, a regional history journal published by Lindenwood University, contains an article about the Daughters of Charity entitled, "The Journey of the Sisters of Charity to St. Louis, 1828". The article includes the full text of the diary written by the Sisters who journeyed to St. Louis to start the first Catholic hospital west of the Mississippi and an essay by Provincial Archivist, Carole Prietto. Contact Jeffrey Smith Ph.D, editor of CONFLUENCE at 636-949-4991 or email him to purchase a copy of CONFLUENCE from Lindenwood University.
The Provincial Archives collects and preserves historical records of the Daughters of Charity in the West Central Province, and makes them available for research. The West Central Province covers 11 Midwestern states, but current ministries are concentrated in Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Collections span from 1828, when the Daughters of Charity arrived in St. Louis, to the present. Collections include manuscripts, publications (both Community literature and official publications of Daughter of Charity institutions), photographs, sound recordings, film, video, artifacts, statuary, and artwork. A heritage library covering history of the Daughters of Charity and the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) is available for use.
The Archives is open Monday through Friday, 8am - 4:30pm. Because of limited reader space, appointments are strongly recommended.
