Steps in Becoming a Daughter of Charity

If you feel drawn to a deeper relationship with God and would like to use your life to make a difference in this world, you may want to consider service as a Daughter of Charity.

As Daughters of Charity, we live together in community, serving persons who are poor. Our ministries take us out into the world, serving in diversely different areas. Choosing to become a Daughter of Charity can be one of the most exciting and rewarding decisions you can make for your life.

If you would like to further investigate the possibility of becoming a Daughter of Charity, please contact us by phone, e-mail or other means. We will be able to answer your questions and share with you what becoming a Daughter of Charity has meant in our lives. You can also read the personal stories from some of our Sisters on "A Sisters' Vocation Story".

These are the steps you would follow if you decide this is the right choice for you.

Initial Discernment - Once a week you'll visit a local community of Daughters of Charity for evening prayer, supper, and to become acquainted with the spirit and direction of the community. During this time, you will continue to seek to understand and discern God's call in your life.

Pre-Postulancy - You'll be invited to live with a local community of Daughters so you can participate more fully in their lives.

Postulancy – During the Postulancy step, you’ll live in an assigned local community of Daughters of Charity and study more intensely our heritage, and charism.

At the end of Postulancy, you and the community together will discern God's call in your life and your admission to the Daughters of Charity.

Admission takes place when you enter the seminary (novitiate) and become a member of the Daughters of Charity. You will be a seminary sister (novice) for two years in order to further interiorize your spiritual life and to initiate your life as a Daughter of Charity. After this intense formation, a sister is “sent on Mission” to serve persons who are poor and to live in community with other Daughters of Charity within the province.
